The Nam : Vietnam Versus Cambodia (Cambodian - Vietnamese War)

An absolutely riveting segment from 'First They Killed my Father', a movie directed by Angelina Jolie (she's actually a great director) about the Cambodian Genocide and the Cambodian - Vietnamese War of 1978.

After Pol Pot's brutal Khmer Rouge regime killed an estimated 30% of all Cambodians in a massive genocide, Vietnam finally stepped in to topple Pol Pot, destroy the Khmer Rouge and restore order to Cambodia.

Unfortunately for Vietnam, the Khmer Rouge adopted the same guerilla strategies which worked so well for Vietnam when they were fighting the Americans just a few years earlier. Hiding deep in jungle bases, they ambushed the Vietnamese, secretly supported by Thailand and the United States.

The little-known Cambodian - Vietnamese War lasted from 1978 to 1991 and cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of Cambodians and over 30,000 Vietnamese. Termed 'Vietnam's Vietnam War', the conflict has largely been forgotten - even by the Vietnamese government.

To this day, many Cambodians are grateful to the Vietnamese for ending 'The Killing Fields'.

The North Vietnamese and the Khmer Rouge are just two of the many factions which can be played in The Nam: Vietnam Combat Operations, a freely-downloadable RTS game about the Vietnam War, released by Pinoy developer Tiger Yan in 2020.

Originally having just the Americans and Vietnamese, its Wider War expansion pack widens the theatre of war to include other countries and factions involved in the Vietnam War, including the Khmer Rouge of Cambodia.

Wider War will be released in 2021. Learn more about The Nam : Vietnam Combat Operations here (  / namcombatoperations  )
