Adrienne Ephrem became interested in engineering after her second grade teacher assigned a project to “make something from a box.” She created a type of flat-screen TV, complete with toilet paper rolls for knobs and a small tape recorder for volume.

She eventually combined that passion with her life-long love for biology and went on to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Wright State University.

Adrienne now works in the Sensors Directorate at the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) in Dayton, OH, where her job is to determine methods to sense bacteria in fuel. Contaminated fuel can cause a myriad of problems if left undetected.

Her work requires collaboration with researchers in the aerospace, propulsion, and materials directorates at AFRL, to name a few. "I found a job where I can make a difference. I enjoy working with the people...it’s just amazing," she shares.

To students wondering if the right job is out there for them, she advises, “there’s an excellent job out there in AFRL…You’ll enjoy it, you’ll work with great people, you’ll get to do things outside the realm of what you learned, and you’ll get to learn even more.”
