A woman's age is very important for reproductive health. When a baby is born the number of
eggs in her ovary is predestined. If she had millions of eggs during her 5th month in the womb,
she has lakhs when delivered, and when she attains maturity, she will have around 1000’s.
Every month we do not lose just one egg, we lose a group of eggs. A group of 10 - 12 eggs fight
to become the dominant follicle, and of that one succeeds. The remaining eggs are destroyed.
So, we don't produce eggs, we only destroy the number of eggs which are already in the body.
The peak reproductive age of women is between 22 and 35 years. When a female ovulates,
this indicates that they are ready for pregnancy. Every month the female body prepares for
pregnancy when ovulation occurs, and when there is no pregnancy, a period occurs.
There are many case studies that indicate if you conceive before 30, you can avert a lot of
cancers like breast cancer and ovarian cancer, later on in life. Conceiving early is very important
not only in the health aspect but also because fertility rate keeps declining. After 35 there is a
very steep curve, it declines faster, and 40 years is the time of menopause. However, for some,
menopause can occur around mid 45-50.
When women require fertility treatment, it is mostly because their egg reserves are already
depleting. What should have happened around 37-38 years, occurs at 28-29. Your lifestyle
choices play an important role in fertility… obesity, smoking etc causes a rapid decline in the
ovarian reserve. Ovarian reserve is the number of eggs left inside your ovary. Smoking destroys
a large number of eggs.
Remember, postponing a pregnancy is very detrimental. So, the age of a woman determines
the success rate of pregnancies, fertility treatments and childbirth. The success rate is higher
when the women are younger. After 35 years of age, the miscarriage rate also goes up. And so,
age is very important and women should realise that every month is very important to conceive
Meeting a doctor at the right time and consulting about the pregnancy and planning a pregnancy
is very important. Stress causes a lot of hormonal imbalance in the body. If hormonal imbalance
happens, the prolactin goes up and women don't ovulate, also men who have extra stress have
poor sperm count. This is especially seen in people who work night shifts. The hormone levels
fluctuate during the day and when your sleep patterns are altered i.e. you stay up at night and
sleep during the day, your body doesn't understand that!
