Juan Domingo Perón (1895–1974) was an influential Argentine military officer and politician who reshaped Argentina’s political landscape. Rising to power after the 1943 coup, he gained popularity by promoting workers’ rights and social welfare, leading to his election as president in 1946, supported by the working class and his wife, Eva “Evita” Perón. His ideology, known as Peronism, combined nationalism, social programs, and economic intervention to empower the poor and drive industrial growth. Though his administration expanded social benefits, it faced criticism for authoritarianism and economic instability. Overthrown in 1955, Perón lived in exile until returning in 1973, winning the presidency again before his death in 1974. His legacy endures, as Peronism remains a dominant force in Argentine politics.
