Blade MCU Reboot in Trouble? Mahershala Ali Rejects Magic Pitch
The Blade reboot has become one of Marvel’s most delayed and controversial projects. Starring Mahershala Ali, the film was expected to be a slam dunk. Instead, it’s been plagued by rewrites, delays, and major creative conflicts.
Recently, X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo revealed his early pitch for Blade, which leaned into the mystical side of the MCU. His version included Deacon Frost, Mount Wundagore, blood magic, the Darkhold, and even the demon Chthon. Marvel boss Kevin Feige reportedly liked the Indiana Jones–style angle, but Ali wasn’t on board. He wanted a more grounded Blade, rejecting the heavy magic tone.
Marvel co-president Lou D’Esposito also called the idea “too comic book,” and the mystical approach was scrapped. DeMayo further criticized Marvel’s script process as an “assembly line,” where bold ideas are stripped away draft after draft.
Now, Marvel says they’ve “finally cracked” Blade’s story, but fans are still skeptical. Should Blade lean into dark supernatural Marvel storytelling or stay street-level vampire hunter?
