'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' is a classic science fiction novel, first published in 1864 in French. It was the third of Verne’s ‘Strange Journeys’, which had begun with the highly successful novel in 1862, ‘Five Weeks in a Balloon’. Based on the assumption that the Earth is hollow and that volcanoes are possibly linked by subterranean fissures; it revolves around the discovery and exploration of a secret tunnel leading through a volcano to the centre of the Earth. German professor Otto Liedenbrock, his nephew Axel, and an Icelandic guide set out on an adventure from which return seems unlikely. The story is narrated by Axel, who is not enthusiastic about the expedition but reluctantly does so to win the hand of Grauben.
Jules Verne’s novels combine scientific facts with adventurous fiction. Most of Verne’s technical information was taken from his friend, a French seismologist, and a lot of scrupulous details underpins a narrative of fresh, imaginative inventiveness, making ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ compelling and convincing.
