Camping at Monk's Lake in Kirirom National Park

A weekend of mountain biking and lakeside camping at Kirirom National Park, Cambodia. Started cycling at Discovery Farms (approx. 8km from bottom of mountain road) and endured the grueling 30km climb up to Monk’s Lake near the summit. Camped alongside the lake and woke up early to follow the Kirirom Backdoor Trail down to Route 4. Hitched a ride back to Phnom Penh on a passing delivery truck for 20,000 riel.

Steve Gosselin and I mapped out the 30km Kirirom Backdoor Trail in 2010. The trail follows a number of logging single-tracks and crosses a few streams and one river (pretty fun in rainy season!). The trail runs along an old hydroelectric dam reservoir and ends with a harrowing 500m altitude descent on a winding, pristine tarmac trail that seems meant for cycling - make sure your brakes are in top condition.
