When Google Maps routes you on a dangerous Road to Nowhere, March 2023.
Here's a dashcam drive-lapse of a sticky situation that Google Maps put us in while driving in the Valdivian rainforest along the coast of Chile.

We were driving from Niebla, Valdivia, Chile to visit the Alerce Milenario tree in Alerce Costero National Park. The Alerce Milenario tree is considered to be one of the oldest trees on the planet, if not THE OLDEST.

From Corral, Chile, Google Maps offered us two routes to reach the tree:
a longer route to the west on a highway via the town of La Union...
or, a shorter route along the coast and through the rainforest of the Reserva Costera Valdiviana.
Of course, we chose what sounded like the scenic route along the coast and through the rainforest.

Google Maps indicated the entire route was 60 miles long and would take 1 hour and 47 minutes. How wrong Google was. We were only able to make it 44 miles - the first 14 were paved, then we turned onto a dirt forestry road that got progressively worse. After 23 miles on the dirt road, we reached a dead end at the Hueicolla River. No bridge, no crossing, just 100 yards across the river that was more than 3 feet deep in places. Certainly, not the possible route as indicated on Google Maps... Google Maps gone bad ;)

In the end, It took us more than 5 hours to crawl our way along the 23-mile dirt road, and then we had to turn around and return the way we came all over again.
