This #WorldCancerDay 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Specialty Chief Editor of Frontiers in Drug Discovery, Prof. Abdel Kareem Azab. Dr. Azab is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Rising Star CPRIT Scholar of Cancer Research, and a Senior Member of The National Academy of Inventors. Dr. Azab is also a founder of four spinoff startup companies: Cellatrix LLC, Targeted Therapeutics LLC, OncInsights LLC, and CovACE Nanotechnology LLC.

Dr. Azab leads a translational cancer therapeutics program that sits at the intersection of cancer biology, immunotherapy, tissue engineering, and drug delivery. In this interview, we reflect on what people-centered drug discovery looks like, what are the main blockers in our journey towards personalized medicine, and how can open-science help us get there.
