Welcome to Wood Turning with John Herega. Today, John is teaching us how to turn a ball toss game. John is using a 50 millimeter chuck. He starts with a fairly large block of wood. Turning on the lathe, he makes the block round. Next, he forms the tenon so that the chuck can grab hold of the piece. He explains a few different techniques on forming tapers to the tenon, then shows a few examples of properly made tenons.

John mounts the work piece in the chuck, tightens it up, and begins the drilling process. He wants to drill a hole that is 1 7/8 inches wide and 1 7/8 inches deep to form the cup. Because of the large hole size, John will be using two different sized drill bits. He starts with the larger 1 7/8 inch bit and drills in a half inch. He then comes in with a smaller one inch bit and goes in the whole 1 7/8 inches. He notes to keep the drill moving at all times or else it will burn. Finally, John switches back to the 1 7/8 bit and goes to the same depth he did with the smaller bit. The drilling is now complete.

Using a scraper, John forms the lip of the cup. Next, he makes cuts that form the cup and handle. He then enhances the piece by using various tools to make grooves, to which he then places stainless wire to create burns. Next, he uses a light to medium grit sandpaper and smooths the entire piece out. The last step is to part it off. John pushes his tool in until the cup comes off. He cleans off the nub and shows off the finished piece.
