Trump Administration Set to Ease Fuel Economy Standards for 2022-2031 Vehicles

The Trump administration plans to propose a major rollback of fuel economy standards finalized under former President Joe Biden, sources told Reuters. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is expected to reduce requirements for 2022-2031 model-year vehicles, making it easier for automakers to sell gas-powered cars. The proposal follows Trump’s earlier moves to end fuel economy penalties and rescind EV incentives, as well as to block California from banning gas vehicles after 2035. Biden-era rules had aimed to increase mileage standards to 50.4 mpg by 2031, cutting gasoline use by 64 billion gallons and emissions by 659 million metric tons, with net benefits estimated at $35.2 billion for drivers. Automakers, including Stellantis and GM, have previously paid hundreds of millions in penalties for failing to meet prior standards.
