When we decided to go to India for a friend's wedding, we knew we wanted to see another country while we were already so far away from home, in such a different part of the world.

We looked into Sri Lanka, but felt nervous because of the loads of people telling us about the instability, "crime", political issues, inflation, gas and food shortages, etc. Everyone seemed to be recommending against going, especially being pregnant and having a kid. It honestly sounded like a dangerous war zone.

From travel in the past we have realized that news is often dramatized and that the day-to-day in countries going through big struggles is usually pretty similar to our own. So after doing a ton of research, we took a chance and bought our tickets to go.

We could NOT believe the feeling that overcame us as we stepped off the plane. It was truly like being in paradise. Our entire experience there wasn't just "safe", but incredible. The people are some of the friendliest we have ever met. No one ever tried to take advantage of us. In fact, we had moments when people wouldn't even accept tips because they just wanted to help. The food was incredibly fresh. The beaches were amazing. Everyone wanted to help, and there was no overwhelming feeling of aggression.

The best part? People were SO kind to our son. They have the hospitality/warmth of Cambodians and love children like Ticos (from Costa Rica).

I honestly cannot recommend many places for young families more than Sri Lanka.
