This video is about Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous bacteria that causes severe, often fatal, food poisoning called listeriosis. Many people sickened by Listeria get meningitis, an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord.
Attorney Fred Pritzker, featured in this video, is one of the few attorneys in the United States who has won multi-million dollar settlements from companies that sold food linked to listeriosis outbreaks. He can be contacted for a free consultation at 1-888-377-8900 (toll free).
What is Listeria monocytogenes and listeriosis?
The human disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes is called listeriosis. It is a rare disease, but very destructive. In America, there are about 1,600 cases per year, but up to 20% of the people sickened die. Those who survive are often left with severe and permanent impairment.
Who is most at risk from this disease?
At least 90% of people who get Listeria infections are pregnant women and their newborns, people 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems.
What happens when a pregnant woman gets listeriosis?
Pregnant women are 10 times more likely than other people to get a Listeria infection. Pregnant Hispanic women are 24 times more likely than other people to get a Listeria infection. Although the woman may have mild symptoms, Listeriainfections can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, and preterm labor. The newborn baby can be born with listeriosis, which may not become apparent for a few days after birth. In many of these cases, the newborn gets Listeria meningitis, which is, as stated above, an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Many of these little ones die from this infection. Those that survive may have permanent, severe brain damage.
Can adults with listeriosis also get meningitis?
Yes, adults with weakened immune systems and adults 65 or older are also at higher risk of getting listeriosis. As with newborns, the Listeria bacteria often spreads through the blood stream to the brain and causes meningitis.
Although very rare, older children, generally with weakened immune systems, can also get Listeria meningitis.
Can a person sickened by Listeria-tainted food get compensation?
If someone is sickened by food tainted with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, that person may have the right to sue the company that sold that food. In some cases, there is a lawsuit against more than one company, for example, a processor and a distributor.
It is important to seek compensation because people who survive a listeria infection often face a lifetime of medical bills, complications and care needs.
Because Listeria is so dangerous, the United States government bans any amountof it in food produced and consumed in America. That means if you’ve been sickened by listeriosis, you’re entitled to fair compensation from the food company that caused you harm.
