Caerphilly County Borough Council has reached yet another milestone in the multimillion pound regeneration of Bargoed as the former Hugh James Jenkins building, located at 51 to 54 Cardiff Road, is demolished and highway improvements are made along Collier’s Walk.

As a result of support through the European Regional Development Fund, Caerphilly was able to appoint contractors Dyer & Butler Ltd. of Swansea who successfully tendered for the works, to move on to the site at the end of March to commence works to demolish the buildings and enhance Collier’s Walk.

The contractor will also carry out the next phase of the development which will see the reconstruction of a new flight of steps between the remaining buildings on Cardiff Road and Collier’s Walk to maintain the pedestrian access to the adjacent retail plateau.

The HJJ building has been vacant for a number of years and the demolition has provided an opportunity to improve pedestrian areas and create a potential development site within the town centre.

The improved steps and other ongoing improvements to the public realm continue to enhance the town greatly complementing the multi award winning library, flagship retail plateau and much improved town centre facilities, delivered as a result of a multi-agency partnership which includes Welsh Government, the European Regional Development Fund, Caerphilly County Borough Council and a number of other agencies.

We have worked hand in hand with our partners and Welsh Government to deliver what is now a sustainable, accessible 21st century town centre for residents, businesses and visitors.”
