Join us on a boat ride adventure across Lake Rotoiti to the Manupirua Springs Hot Pools.

Before we even go any further, we’d like to say that Kiwis are hands down one of the friendliest people in the world.

While we were looking to extend our stay through the Home Exchange website, we met a lovely couple who invited us for a boat ride on Lake Rotoiti to have a picnic and visit Manupirua Hot Pools.

Richard and Christine were originally from the UK but moved to New Zealand in 1974 with their two young children. Little did we know we’d be spending many exciting moments together with them on Lake Rotoiti.

It was a beautiful sunny day, and we were excited to spend time exploring new parts of the lake.

There are actually two connected lakes, Rotoiti and Rotorua. Rotoiti (Small Lake in Maori) was discovered first and was given the name because they believed it was smaller than Rotorua (Second Lake in Maori). Still, in reality, it’s a lot bigger.

New Zealand is amazing because almost every place has a Maori name and we love that we can learn about the Maori language through geography.

As we were enjoying the boat ride, we were trying to determine which of our Rotorua adventures was the best. And it wasn’t easy to choose one, but we all agreed it would have to be Whitewater Rafting. You can check out the video of our experience at ▶️    • World's Highest Rafted Waterfall !!! ...

We made a short stop for a picnic lunch at a place called Honeymoon Island, and then we were off to discover Manupirua Springs Hot Pools.

Did you know that the Manupirua Hot Pools were Rotorua’s first official geothermal baths? What made them even more unique to visit was the fact that they could only be reached through water or air.

There were eight mineral hot pools ranging in temperature. Add the blue waters of the lake Rotoiti, and we found ourselves in a patch of paradise on Earth.

Angelique, Julia, and Richard were brave enough to jump into the cold lake waters, but they were quickly back in the hot springs to warm up. We noticed that the hot water had a little bit of sulphur smell to it, but it made our skin so smooth.

If you ever come visit the Manupirua Springs Hot Pools, don’t forget to take your silver jewelry off because the minerals will turn it dark.

All too soon, it was time to leave paradise until next time.

We’d like to express our deepest gratitude to Richard and Christine for making such a wonderful adventure possible.
