The UK Government has taken unprecedented action to enforce deportations, imposing visa restrictions on the Democratic Republic of Congo after it refused to take back criminals and illegal migrants. The move marks the first time powers introduced in 2022 have been used and signals a tougher approach under Labour’s leadership.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood accused the DRC of operating “unacceptably poor and obstructive returns processes,” warning that further sanctions could follow. Preferential visa access for diplomats has been withdrawn, while citizens from the country will no longer benefit from fast-track entry into the UK. Officials have also warned that a full visa ban — potentially including senior leaders — remains on the table.
The announcement follows similar pressure applied to Angola and Namibia, both of which agreed to accept deportees after being warned of possible restrictions. Although relatively few migrants originate from these countries, the Home Office believes the policy will act as a deterrent and encourage wider international cooperation.
Critics note similarities with Donald Trump’s immigration policies in the United States, where visa and travel bans have been used to force compliance on deportations. Despite internal unease, ministers insist the measures are necessary as deportations rise but small boat crossings continue to surge.
