Why were RTX 3080/3090 GPUs crashing?

After Nvidia launched the new 456.55 drivers that fixed the crashes, it seems like many were led to believe the issue was buggy launch drivers all along, but it really wasn't that simple. The problem was far more complex and all those rumors about capacitor problems weren't just bogus rumors after all.
