December 1st, 2022 // gaze (day 82/90 of my birthday glow-up)

POEM 📝

i often used to find my self attempting to perform for the gaze of others.

whether it be for the gaze of a man, woman, or person of interest.

the gaze of someone who would bully my appearance.

the gaze of society.

28 years on this earth, and it took me
26 of those years
to truly find value in myself outside of my
physical looks
or what i could provide
outside of labor.

although i knew for years now that being
me alone was enough,
taking the time to unlearn
the unconscious bias i placed on myself
has been a journey of
killing my ego
and coming to my truest self.

it’s unending.

i am so glad i am at an age
where i know the only person i have to perform for
is myself.

i turn 28 in eight days and i’m actually starting to feel excited about it? 🤣 i typically feel funky about it, but the amount of change i’ve gone through deserves to be celebrated.
