On the 24th of May 1941, KMS Bismarck & KMS Prinz Eugen attempted to enter the North Atlantic. HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales intercepted both German vessels along the Denmark Straight. The HMS Hood opened fire from a distance of 30 miles southeast of the Germans.
The battle lasted less than 8 minutes before HMS Hood was struck by a salvo from the Bismarck. HMS Hood suffered a direct hit to its magazine, almost instantly detonating the ammunition. In less than 3 minutes, Hood sank to the bottom of the ocean; only 3 crew survived of the 1,418 onboard.
Moments after the Hood's sinking, Prince of Wale's suffered malfunctions with its armament; its turrets had jammed. Alone and unable to return fire, Prince of Wales suffered 7 direct hits from both Bismarck & Prinz Eugen. Ultimately, HMS Prince of Wales was forced to withdraw, concluding the Battle of The Denmark Stait.
