Steam Incorporated's AB 608 is the subject of the first episode in my experimental new series; Locomotive Spotlight. This is where we have a brief look into the history of a specific New Zealand locomotive (not a whole class, just one engine) before showcasing footage of said locomotive in action.

AB 608 is a 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive, built by New Zealand Railways' own Addington Workshops in 1915. She was named 'Passchendaele' to honour NZR railwaymen who fell while serving in World War 1. Another claim to fame for this engine is that she was the first AB ever built; the class would go on to have 152 engines overall (11 of which were converted from WAB class 4-6-4 tank engines).

In recognition of her historical significance, AB 608 was saved for preservation in 1967. She is now based at Steam Incorporated's Paekakariki depot, and following restoration between 1997 and 2014 the engine is now in working order and is also mainline-certified.
