Right now, based on how much people are willing to pay, the expected 10-year return for the S&P 500 isn't looking great—somewhere between +2% and -2%, similar to past periods when valuations were this high. That’s not exactly encouraging news for long-term investors.

So what are the options? One way to think about this is to compare valuations across the world. When we look at global markets, the U.S. stands out—not just as expensive, but literally off the charts compared to other countries. That means there may be better investment opportunities outside the U.S., where companies are priced lower relative to their earnings potential.

Does this mean you should abandon the S&P 500? Not necessarily. But it does mean you should have a strong reason for sticking with it at these valuations. More than anything, make sure you're diversified and that you truly understand what you own and why you own it.
