LEGO Ninjago Ultra Sonic Raider (71739) Stop Motion Speed Build

Next up on the build list is the second last of the Ninjago 10 Year Anniversary sets: the Ultra Sonic Raider. And what a beast it is: four vehicles that combine into one and 7 Minifigures! It’s behemoth that will take up a fair bit of shelf space and it took a while to film.

Overall I think the Ultra Sonic Raider, when combined, looks absolutely awesome. It’s a cool, menacing vehicle that reminds me of other combiners like Voltron, Power Rangers, etc. (kids: ask your parents if you don’t know what those things are). Some of the individual vehicles are a little less impressive however due to design compromises (more on that below). There’s plenty of play features and hours of fun to be had with this one. It also looks good as a display piece.

The central motorbike thing is ok although I would like it to be able to stand upright by itself (had to use bricks when shooting the video), and the transforming function is cool; even if a bit unnecessary. The plane thing is cool too. I like the use of fins for the cockpit walls and how they attach. The use of large blade pieces for wings is very appropriate for the theme. The side cars or alleged “all terrain vehicles” are where it goes a little pear shaped. They don’t balance solely on the tracks, so they have a small wheel on the opposite side to stop them from tipping over. The wheel is small and unobtrusive so it can’t be seen when combined, but just looks terrible when you can see it. The small diameter and width wheel also screams the opposite of “all terrain” to me. The build around this area also looks a bit plain and lets the rest of the design down.

The minifigures are good even though they are fairly standard for these sets. You get a Zane, Cole, Kai and Jay, plus a couple of bad guys in Rattla and Mezmo. Then there’s the Golden Zane Legacy which is very cool. I really like the transparent blue part for the top of his helmet which makes it look like ice.

I think this has retired, or will be soon and has been on sale with some hefty discounts lately (I got it for about $50 AUD off RRP). Do yourself a favour and pick it up before it retires and you have to pay double RRP!
