Plumb Beach

Plumb Beach (sometimes spelled "Plum") is a beach and surrounding neighborhood along the north shore of Rockaway Inlet, in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It is located near the neighborhoods of Sheepshead Bay and Gerritsen Beach, just off the Belt Parkway.

Plumb Beach was originally part of a small island until Hog Creek was filled in during the late 1930s, connecting the beach to the rest of Brooklyn. Since 1972 it has been a part of Gateway National Recreation Area, though the parking lot and greenway that provide primary access to the shore are the responsibility of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and the New York City Department of Transportation. The neighborhood is part of Brooklyn Community District 15, although a section of the beach is not part of a Community District.

In May and June, horseshoe crabs climb onto the beach to mate. That beach is often subjected to heavy beach erosion, as incoming storms often blow large amounts of water up the Rockaway Inlet past the beach into Jamaica Bay. In the summer, the beach attracts kiteboarding enthusiasts, as the southerly sea breeze makes the area ideal for this use.

Plumb Beach now directly connected to mainland Brooklyn NY was originally an island till the great hurricane of 1938 – the Long Island Express – did significant damage to the remaining buildings on the island. Robert Moses finished the deed over the next two years, filling in Hog Creek in the process. Plumb Island, in terms of both community and geography, was no more.

Sailors had long stopped there, perhaps snacking on the beach plums that gave the island its name.

The National Park Service acquired Plumb Beach in 1972, and added it to the Gateway National Recreation Area.

Plumb Beach is a stretch of shoreline, tidal mudflat, low saltmarsh areas, a tidal lagoon, a dune system, and woodland thickets at the entrance to Gerritsen Creek adjacent to the Belt Parkway. This area is a great location for wind-related activities such as windsurfing and kiteboarding and provides important habitat for horseshoe crabs. There is also a kayak launch at Plumb Beach.

Calm waters and strong winds make the sand beach a favorite take off for windsurfers and kite boarders. Launching is recommended at higher tide as mud flats make the walk to water several hundred yards at low tide. A permit is required.

Caution: Do not disturb the horseshoe crabs in this prime breeding area. Challenging wind and tide conditions.
