"Hi, this is Dennis Hansen. I’m with New Beginnings Recovery Center. Thanks for listening in today. Today we are going to be talking about the Ashton protocol and getting off of benzodiazepines, or the Ashton method for dummies. And today we’re going to answer some basic questions about the Ashton protocol.

Hi Dennis, why should I do the Ashton protocol versus an inpatient ten day detox?

Generally speaking, inpatient treatment is for a very abbreviated period of time. And typically the clock is ticking and there’s an insurance carrier that has a limited amount of time they’re willing to pay for treatment. Unfortunately, that may work well for the insurance company, but it does not work well for the patient suffering from benzodiazepine withdrawal. The Ashton protocol is not a quick protocol, but it is a sure method. Ashton method will result in the highest likelihood of success in coming off of benzodiazepines. For those that are in a rush, it’s not going to work. Essentially, this is a program that aids in the healing of neuroreceptors that have been damaged from long-term shifting from one benzodiazepine to another, from long term tolerance withdrawal, and various things that have happened along the way with benzo dependency. All of these episodes create damage to the set of neuroreceptor sites. The entire Ashton protocol is designed to maintain a very consistent blood tissue concentration level of benzodiazepines and gradually eliminating the symptoms of withdrawal produced by tolerance, and then a very gradual, downward titration of benzodiazepines. The result of this method is that patients usually lose the vast majority of the withdrawal symptoms they have been experiencing, and ultimately have the highest likelihood of success of actually coming off of benzos. And there are never any promises when it comes to any method of benzodiazepines, but this method seems to result in a higher likelihood of success, with success being defined as coming off of and stopping benzos completely, walking away from the last milligram, being treated for post-acute withdrawal, and ultimately, having the symptoms dissipate. And that is what consider to be a success. We have tried at New Beginnings Recovery Center many different methods and we have found that the Ashton protocol works in most cases.
