(31 May 2012) Germany's newly-elected President Joachim Gauck continued his state visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories on Thursday.
Gauck travelled to Ramallah in the West Bank where he was received in an official ceremony at the headquarters of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Abbas and Gauck then held a joint news conference in which Abbas said he had spoken to the German president about the obstacles to the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.
Gauck then went on to meet Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad at Fayyad's office in Ramallah.
Before his meetings in Ramallah, Gauck began the day with a visit to a West Bank girls' school in Burin village on the outskirts of Nablus.
He inaugurated the school and met local teachers and students.
Gauck arrived in the Middle East on Tuesday when he met Israeli officials, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
During his first official trip to the Jewish state, he also met his Israeli counterpart Shimon Peres, and visited visit Israel's national Holocaust memorial.
