You can call it from the top, the floor slides open, making way for the platform. Same button takes you down. Once the platform is in mid-travel, the top slides shut to keep idiots from blundering down the shaft.

Call it from the bottom floor, same story. Same button takes you up. Once the platform is in mid-travel, the bottom slides shut to keep idiots from blundering into the hollow bottom.

The mechanics mainly consist of observers, pistons, sticky pisons, repeaters, redstone dust, trapdoors and flying machines - as well as two vertical-moving culmns that reset themselves (via a piston that sends it one block up or down, before an observer at the end triggers a return piston). The one culmn carries a signal all the way to the top, where an observer picks up the top return piston and sends a signal to the secondary culmn that carries a signal all the way down.

These two culmns act as the main component that send a signal both up and down to triggers on the top and bottom for the vertical flying machine that serves as the elevator itself

Seperate observers placed in the frame itself pick up the motion of the culmns and send a signal to the horizontal flying machines that serve as the safety floors -through a series of repeaters that delay the closing triggers.

Notes:
Exessive delay will cause the safety floors to return to their original position and collide with the elevator. The signal has to reach the closing trigger BEFORE the safety floor reaches the closing trigger. No repeaters are needed for the opening triggers.

Vertical culmns can be exteded by linking an additional colmn with an observer in between a return piston of one culmn and the sender piston of the additional culumn.

An additional block may be used to extend an observer's signal

The horizontal flying machines in my design are one slime honey block longer on either end that carry trapdoors with them.

It is absolutely necessary to use unmovable blocks where slime and honey blocks travel along to prevent snagging.
