Hey friends, it’s Debbie from Refresh Restyle! In this cozy craft session, I’m turning a scalloped oval frame cutout into the prettiest, vintage-inspired wall art using a light chalk paste base and a bicycle heat transfer with a heat press. If you’ve ever wondered whether you can “sublimate” onto a painted wood cutout, this one’s for you—spoiler: it works and looks like a dreamy watercolor!

What you’ll learn in this video:
How to prep a wood cutout with chalk paste (I used Vanilla for the backer and a soft Green for the scalloped frame)
Why a light base (vanilla/white) helps heat transfers pop
Heat press settings that worked for me: 360°F for 60 seconds

Project details:
Shape: Scalloped oval frame cutout (comes in multiple sizes)

Transfer: Bicycle scene (one-use, two designs per pack)
Result: Soft, watercolor-like artwork perfect for entryways, mantels, or a gallery wall

Pro tips from the craft table:
If the paint feels cool to the touch, it’s still damp—dry fully before pressing.
Tape the transfer to your heat pad so nothing shifts when you move the press.
Use parchment or a Teflon sheet on top of the transfer.
If your press is smaller than the design, press one side, then slide and finish the other—maintain pressure and time.
It’s hot-hot-hot! Keep oven mitts nearby for safe handling.
Transfers are one-time use; a second press will be very light.
You can do this on totes, tees, and phone cases too—so many possibilities.

Scalloped oval frame wood cutout (backer + scalloped frame)
Chalk paste/paint: Vanilla (backer) and Green (frame)
Heat transfer: Bicycle design (also love the magnolia option!)
Heat press (360°F, 60 seconds)
Heat-resistant tape
Parchment or Teflon sheet
Sanding block or sandpaper
Sponge/brush for paint
Clear tacky glue
Heat pad or ironing board
Optional: ribbon/hanger, additional wording
