You will see K4's on the New York and Long Branch, GG1's on the Main Line, and even Owl commuter cars. H. Reid was a well known photographer of steam in the 1940s and 1950s. A native of Norfolk, Va., he attended Elon College and graduated from William & Mary. He was also a writer for the Norfolk Ledger-Dispatch, the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot, and the Newport News Times-Herald. His photos specialize in the Appalachian coal railroads as well as the little short lines that dotted the southern United States. He also published a well known book "The Virginian Railway" which was his favorite of the coal roads. His photos also appear in Trains Magazine in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Photography was his specialty, so the movies were almost an afterthought. Reid was well known for is wit and having a way with words. He even wrote a little poem about his beloved Virginian Railway:

"The Virginian had a noble trait.
It seldom ran its coal trains late.
3 and 4 went in the hole
To let drags by, toting coal.
Its MB engines,
Pride of the line,
Hauled the tonnage
And steamed up fine".
