Описание к видео Jerusalem by Night: Downtown Walking Tour

Episode 38: Explore downtown Jerusalem at night, as we stroll along Ben Yehudah Street to Jaffa Street, from where we will walk along the Old City walls towards the Damascus Gate. From there, we will continue towards the Jewish Ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Me'ah She'arim and end this tour at the Mahane Yehuda market.

Ben Yehuda Street Pedestrian Mall (00:15)
This pedestrian area is located in the heart of Jerusalem's downtown triangle, which is bordered by #BenYehudaStreet, #KingGeorgeStreet and #JaffaStreet. #EliezerBenYehuda had been the driving force behind the revival of the #HebrewLanguage in the late 19th century, and you'll find a street named after him in almost every #Israeli city. Jerusalem's Ben Yehuda Street had been one of the city's main streets even before the establishment of the #StateOfIsrael in #1948. It was only in 1983, however, that this street was closed to traffic and turned into a pedestrian mall.

Zion Square (05:20)
This is the central square of Jerusalem's downtown, at the meeting point of Jaffa Street, Ben Yehuda Street, Yoel Moshe Salomon Street and Herbert Samuel Street. Since this video was shot during the #Jewish holiday of #Hannukah (#FestivalOfLights), we can see a big #Menorah, containing nine "arms", right in the middle of the square. This is a main hangout- and meeting spot in the city, and many times one can see street musicians and performance artists entertaining the crowds at this central spot.

Jaffa Street (06:20)
This is #Jerusalem downtown's main thoroughfare, leading from the #CentralBusStation at the city's entrance all the way to the Old City's #JaffaGate. This street is closed to traffic, and since 2002, the #JerusalemLightRail runs along here.

Tzahal Square (15:10)
Also known as #IDFSquare, this had been the border area between #Israel and #Jordan from #1948 until #1967, during which time #Jerusalem had been a divided city. In front of us the #Ottoman walls of the Old City are already visible.

Damascus Gate (30:30)
#DamascusGate is the largest and most beautiful of the eight gates that lead into the #OldCity. #Muslim #Arabs from #EastJerusalem use this gate in order to reach the #TempleMount (#HaramAlSharif), while #UltraOrthodoxJews use this gate in order to reach the #WesternWall, also known as the #WailingWall.

Me'ah She'arim (41:05)
The Jewish #UltraOrthodox neighborhood of #MeahShearim was the fifth Jewish neighborhood to be built outside the #OldCity walls in 1874. Ultra-Orthodox #Jews make up about one third of Jerusalem's total population of 900,000. During the holiday of #Hannukah, in which Jews celebrate the rededication of the #JerusalemTemple in the second century BCE, it is customary to light a nine-armed candelabra called #Hannukiah. In Me'ah She'arim, we can often see that little oil jars with wicks are lit instead of candles, and that the candelabra itself is displayed on the street (47:10), for the public to enjoy the beautiful view.

Mahane Yehuda Market (1:04:55)
This colorful and lively fruit- and vegetable market is fast becoming Jerusalem's main daytime- and nighttime venue of choice. After the vendors close their shops, bars start opening up, and #MahaneYehudah turns into one big party zone.

There is much more to explore in the magnificent city of #Jerusalem.
