Описание к видео Jaccard Citizen’s Guide - How do climate-concerned citizens get climate-sincere politicians?

In this video, Mark Jaccard helps climate-concerned citizens with the big challenge of identifying climate-sincere politicians, getting them elected and keeping them in power. This is a challenge for three reasons. The first reason is that climate-insincere politicians are good at faking it. They set distant climate targets to appear sincere, but then put together a long list of ineffective but sincere-sounding policies - like subsidies for efficient buildings, information programs, and improvements to government facilities. Climate-sincere politicians, in contrast, acknowledge that only carbon pricing and/or stringent regulations, implemented immediately, can decarbonize the economy. The second reason is that climate-sincere citizens need to vote strategically to ensure that climate-insincere politicians don’t get elected in first-past-the-post electoral systems as in the US, the UK and Canada. Depending on one’s electoral district, it may mean voting for a candidate who is not your most preferred, but who has the best chance of preventing the election of your least preferred - the candidate of the climate-insincere party. Climate-concerned citizen’s who refuse to vote strategically bear some responsibility for our decades of climate failure. One example is the election of George Bush in the US in 2000, contributing to the failure of the Kyoto Accord. Another is Canada’s lost decade of Stephen Harper’s Conservative government, when 60% of Canadian voters wanted strong climate action, but not enough voted strategically. The third reason is that climate-concerned citizens need to be willing to act outside of their comfort zone to signal to fellow citizens the importance of removing a climate-insincere government or changing its policies. This includes all kinds of civil actions including strong political participation, boycotts, letter campaigns and for civil activism of various kinds.
