NANAIMO - A young, aspiring football player in Nanaimo is having his career sidelined after being diagnosed by a very rare medical condition.

Khailnn Burdock is 13 years old and recently learned he has inherited a cancer gene on his colon. When he was diagnosed, his family was living in South Carolina. Doctors there said his only option was to have his colon removed.

But Khailnn's father is a Canadian citizen and knew there were more possibilites for alternate treatments in Canada. He moved Khailnn and his family to Nanaimo. After receiving months of medical treatments by doctors in British Columbia, it appeared Khailnn was on the way to making a remarkable recovery.

But over Christmas, the Burdock's received a call they never wanted to receive. Tests revealed that the treatment took a turn for the worse and doctors told Khailnn's mom they had no other option but to remove her son's colon.

The surgery will likely sideline the young football player for years, just before he was prepared to play high school football.

The community is rallying around the young star's family and is organizing a beer and burger night January 19th at the Harewood Arms Pub.
