How to make the canter more adjustable with canter poles with Kirstin Kelly. Having a horse that is adjustable is the secret to having more confidence to trust your rhythm when cantering down to a jump. Being about to shorten and lengthen the stride easily is super important as it eliminates the risk of getting a really long stride or a very short chippie distance. If a horse is adjustable, it also means that he is using his body correctly. We want a relaxed body but a mind that is ready at all times, looking for the jump and listening to the rider. Horses that can't adjust their canter are often slow and stiff or quick and tight. These horses get nervous when the stride isn't perfect as they find it hard to adjust easily. The simple exercise of canter poles ensures that horses stay supple longitudinally enabling the rider to make smooth subtle changes.
Riding canter poles also has great benefits for the rider, it helps teach you about how the different canters feel and which canter is the best canter to jump from. It also is important for a rider to feel what a short distance needs to be ridden from and if they walk a long distance in a competition, it's important to know how much bigger they need to ride the canter to make the distance work.
As I have covered in my video "how to improve your eye" I also believe cantering poles is so important to improving your eye for jumping and I encourage my pupils to do pole work every couple of days.    • How to improve your "eye" for the dis...
