Blood urea nitrogen or creatinine these are the tests which tell us about the functioning of the kidney. Many people ask me what is BUN and what is creatinine? BUN and creatinine are chemical substances which are excretory products in the body produced by the kidney because of protein metabolism. These are very important tests to assess the functioning of the kidneys. Of these two, creatinine is a more important. That's because creatinine is very specific for kidney function whereas BUN or blood urea nitrogen is also a kidney function test but it is affected by many other factors like hydration status, diet, etc. Therefore if a person wants to know or assess his or her kidney functions we have to do a BUN and creatinine levels of the blood. These tests are very simple and can be done in almost any laboratory and the results can be obtained in about half an hour to 45 minutes. Many people ask me what are the symptoms of kidney disease? How do I know whether my kidney is affected whether they are functioning well or not? The answer is in the initial phases you will never have any symptoms you will not know whether your kidney is functioning properly or not. Only blood reports will tell us the kidney function test in the initial part of the kidney damage and the commonly done blood tests are BUN or blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine. Both of them increase when even when there is light damage to the kidney function. Only in the later parts of the kidney damage the person experiences some symptoms. What are these symptoms? The symptoms are there will be some swelling of the face, hand and feet. There will be decrease in the urine output but many times a kidney could be damaged even without a decrease of the urine output. So the person passes urine normally and in normal quantities but still the kidneys could be damaged. Sometimes there could be drying of the skin and sometimes the patient may have nausea and lack of appetite and in extreme cases he may have vomiting also. There is also general fatigue or a tiredness. The patient feels that he doesn't feel like doing anything, he lacks energy. These are the common symptoms of kidney diseases but as I told you the most important test to determine kidney function is serum creatinine not the symptoms.
