The voyage of the MS Schwabenland to Antarctica in 1938 to 1939 has gained quite the notoriety as it is the basis of many conspiracy theories about hidden German bases in Antarctica.

This video will not be covering these, however, but only the known expedition and the ship, the Schwabenland, itself as well as the region named after it.

Much of the mystery surrounding the Third German Antarctic expedition comes from the fact that the government of the Third Reich managed to keep it secret.

So it was only announced at the end of the expedition and the war put an end to any actual German claim to parts of Antarctica.

It was not a purely research expedition though.
