Description: I was very excited when Stuart Smith introduced me to fellow South African knifemaker, Charl Pienaar. Charl started making knives in 2013 and enjoys focusing on handcrafted folding knives. Every knife is made completely by hand with no use of CNC machines. He prefers to build knives using materials intended for use and carry.
The CPK1 is a framelock front flipper that runs on ceramic bearings. Generally bearings are made either from tool steel or from stainless steel. Stainless steel can wear away, resulting in uneven action over time. Tool steel bearings can oxidize making the action rough. Ceramic bearings are the best of all worlds -- extremely hard and wear resistant, they are also inert and will not oxidize
The drop point blade is made from Bohler M390 stainless steel with a hand rubbed satin finish. M390 takes an incredibly sharp edge and holds onto it due to its high concentration of vanadium and chromium carbides. Its unique powdered metallurgical process also promotes a uniform carbide distribution and clean steel properties, making M390 a popular steel used in surgical cutting instruments and in applications requiring a high finish. It offers excellent corrosion resistance due to its high concentration of chromium. The knife can be easily deployed -- using either the index finger or thumb -- with the ambidextrous and discreet front flipper tab.
The handle is made from bead blasted titanium and features a front scale made from copper flake forged carbon fiber. Barrel spacers keep the knife extremely lightweight (only 2.8 oz!) and easy to keep clean of lint and debris. A lockbar stabilizer prevents the frame lock from being bent out too far during use. A custom titanium pivot collar surrounds the titanium pivot. The satin finished titanium pocket clip features Charl's maker mark and is mounted for right-side, tip-up carry.
