And in Conclusion!!! Thanks for the wait folks! It took some time to get this fella how I wanted him! Using stills recently obtained from clean bluray sources, and corrected color period photos, I have attempted to paint this shark as accurately as possible! At long last, I have my grail! Read "more" for details!
Oh, and please forgive the slight in and out focus, as I had a lot of trouble lighting this model to really capture the accurate colors. I had to use lower lighting that I wanted to, and this camera is not top notch, so bear with me, and there are worthy shots in there!
As for the model itself, Thanks again to the amazing David Stann! His tireless work on this model is why I have one, and why it is so adaptable to customization or adaptation. It is so close to totally accurate, that I simply moved a few pieces and added some bumps in the skin to account for it.
And, having seen his painted version in progress, let me tell ya, had I seen that first, I might have simply gone with his painted version, due out soon!
The man is a total artist!
To paint this model, I totally hand painted it (No airbrush used!), using Vallejo acrylic paints, various grey shades and other assorted colors, which are all hand applied, and coated it with Mr Hobby Mr Super Clear Matt coat.
To make the water effect work, I used Intermediate Gauzy Agent clear coat SHINE ENHANCER, and it really makes the water surface seem, like water!
The rest is superglue, time and patience!
Oh, and no actual BLACK or WHITE paint was used anywhere on the kit! Darkest color, Dark Grey, and the lightest is not white, but ivory, on the teeth, and the lightest skin tone is called White Grey! All bottled colors!
COOL SCIENTIFIC ACCURACY NOTE: The small dark dots on his snout area, which I reproduce on my model, above his mouth and on the sides of his head, are not so much color fade paint technique, as they are representations of real shark sensory pores called " ampullae of Lorenzini" which help real sharks detect prey by detecting electrical fields caused by activity! Yeah! They are real shark features, which are accounted for on Bruce! Gotta love it! Thanks again to Jaws Bruce painter, Ward Welton! What a job that must have been!
Photos of Joe Alves and Robert Mattey, and the large background one of the shark over the water, at the video's end are from the book "Designing Jaws" by Joe Alves.
This model is and was a labor of love for me. I enjoyed it more than most kits I have built, simply because of the love I have for the source subject.
I have studied this bloody shark for nearly 49 years now, and to finally have a thing to paint and play with, to make it close to my dream version, is priceless!
GO for your grails! They can be obtained! NEVER GIVE UP! Get it! If it's a thing, object, figure, statue, whatever, go for it!
And your's may not take nearly 50 years! lol!
Til next video,
Les out!
PS: Forgot to thank Greg at the Artfull Barn in Clarkesville, for the paint and sprays used in the painting of this kit, and for building up the texture of the shark's skin (multiple passes of misted mattcoat spray!). And to the Soque River Modelers, my model club, for being a great, support group for this and other model projects! It's so nice to have such a great (and award winning!) gang to hang with!
