On Sunday, China announced that Wu Yingjie, the former Communist Party chief of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), has been put under investigation as part of the country’s anti-corruption campaign. Wu is one of a series of hardline party bosses appointed by the CCP. On December 10, 2022, the US Department of the Treasury instituted sanctions on Wu Yingjie. Wu Yingjie, the child of a Chinese Communist cadre sent to Tibet in the 1950s, grew up in Tibet, unlike most senior Chinese officials in the region. Before Sunday’s announcement, many saw Wu Yingjie as representing the second generation of Chinese in Tibet (Zanger-dai), beginning to rule the place.
