Despite BC Premier Christy Clark's assurances to the contrary, First Nations have many questions about her government's LNG vision. At a recent Liberal-led BC LNG conference, Clark expounded on the virtues of involving aboriginal peoples in her promised LNG boom. Yet outside the Vancouver Convention Centre ballroom where Clark boasted of cooperation with First Nations, the leaders of three major tribal associations - covering the entire span of the industry - sang a different tune.

Treaty 8 Tribal Chief Liz Logan - whose people are forced to deal with the impacts of the shale gas industry which will feed LNG plants on the coast - told the premier there would be no LNG without their say-so.

Terry Tegee, Tribal Chief of the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council represents much of the territory that would be traversed by multiple proposed pipelines carrying northeast BC gas to the coast. As far as he's concerned, "LNG is up in the air...There is no decision made yet."

Finally, Coastal First Nations Executive Director Art Sterritt says his members are very concerned about the potential health impacts from plant emissions.

It's clear from talking to these three leaders, whose territories cover the gamut of the proposed LNG industry - from production to transmission, to the plants and tanker routes - that First Nations have far more concerns about this industry than the government is letting on.
