I’m a touring live-sound engineer. I have toured the world since 1997 mixing sound for some very famous artists and bands, including Paolo Nutini, Franz Ferdinand, Bryan Ferry, Morrissey, Motorhead, Spritualized, Kings of Leon, Beth Orton and many many others (I’ve listed this selection of names to demonstrate the range of artists).

I “came out” as a transgender woman during the first lock down of the Pandemic in 2020, so it was relatively recent. Almost all of my professional network and experience was established before this. But as the live music sector has reawakend over the past year or so, I have resumed my touring work as a visibly trans woman in the Touring Crew sector, generally experiencing a wholesome and positive reception.

I’ve met one other visibly trans woman in my field, just one. Ever. So it is a sector where representation of “my” minority is almost non-existant. In all honesty I believe that all women are still under represented in the sector, as are all aspects of LGBT+ and different ethinicities and indeed people with disabilities. The positive aspect is that this is now a conversation that is being had in more than one place and indeed the numbers are starting to shift. I have become determined to carry on in my sector just to do my small part in being visible, hopefully encouraging others along the way.
