This is one of the more famous Simon and Garfunkel hits. In this one I have tried to keep the original feel of the song, plus I have tried to employ the beautiful harmonies that they used, making a rich texture.
Paul Simon was one of those talented songwriters that seemed to know the secret of writing hit after hit. The songs sound simple, but when you break them down they are deceptively intricate. For example this one uses 4/4 and 6/4 time signatures . I remember beginning to arrange popular songs years ago and hearing Manuel Barrueco's arrangement of Paul Simon's "Old Friend" gave me a model of the way I'd like to do it. A also remember reading somewhere that Manuel was surprised by the complexity of his songs.
