What is the best diet for weight and fat loss? 4 Things Every Diet Should Have
There are so many kinds of diets out there. Vegan, vegetarian, carnivore, ketogenic, if it fits your macros, intuitive, and paleo, just to name a few. I’ll do my best to explain each individual diet in their own posts, but they all make extraordinary claims. For example, the keto diet claims to be the best way to lose fat. It seems like they all make that claim. So, which one is the best diet for weight loss? No matter which one you investigate you will have people that swear by it and others that will call you crazy. The truth is you can lose weight no matter which method you use if you have a calorie deficit in place. But there is more to a healthy diet than just how many calories you’re eating. Today we will go over the 4 things every diet has to have.
Diets Should Not Leave Out a Macronutrient
The food we eat is broken down into 3 main categories called macronutrients. These are proteins, carbs, and fats. Each one of them has important roles in the body. Protein is critical for many functions like building muscle and providing structure for tissues. Carbs are used for energy during activities like weightlifting or running. Fat can be used to store energy and is a vital component of hormone production. To function properly the body needs all three of these macronutrients. So why do some diet plans remove one of these entirely?
It comes down to restriction. We know that to lose weight there must be a calorie deficit. The calories we use up must be more than the calories we take in. It’s easy to say, “carbs are bad” or “fats will make you fat” and then eliminate them from the diet. Usually this creates a calorie deficit which will lead to weight loss. However, over a long period of time it can lead to other health concerns. Think about your body like a car. It constantly needs gas, oil, and coolant to work properly. If you neglect any one of these it will break down. The same thing applies to the human body.
Diets Should Be Simple
There are literally millions of recipes on the internet. We’re guilty of posting a few ourselves. You could make a new one every single day, which is great if you’re someone who gets bored easily but that is a lot of work. A good diet plan will be simple to execute. It should focus on ingredients that are widely available and usable in several dishes. It should focus on simple cooking techniques like baking or searing. 72 hour short ribs sounds delicious but I don’t have the time for that. If your kitchen looks like a tornado went through it every night, then it might be time to change things up.
Diets Shouldn’t Break the Bank
One of the biggest misconceptions out there is that healthy eating is more expensive. If you are preparing your meals at home this is simply not true. If you are buying “healthy” premade meals or you’re eating out frequently then the costs will add up. Restaurants will take the opportunity to charge more for items that are marketed as healthy but don’t have any added costs. Even worse, these items may not be as healthy as advertised. Often, they are loaded with extra sodium and fat. The best way to save money and stick to your plan is to cook at home. According to Top Nutrition Coaching a restaurant meal is 2.85x the cost of making the same meal at home. It will require more work and there will be a learning curve if you don’t know how to cook yet, but it’s a skill that can save you thousands of dollars while also losing fat.
You Should Enjoy the Diet Plan
It doesn’t matter how much willpower you have. If every day you eat brown rice, boiled chicken, and steamed broccoli you will fail. But if there is variety and you like the foods you’re eating then the diet will not feel like work. You will not feel like you must deprive yourself of the things you enjoy. That’s why I don’t like the word diet. Being on a diet means you will also be off a diet. Rather than going back and forth, take the time to find foods you enjoy that fit into your plan. Sustained success is what we’re after, so it must become a lifestyle.
