2012-13 Horizon State/Section D5 Champions, Season Highlights

2013 state champion Horizon had a magical year as sophomore Ethan Underwood '15 drained a long NBA trifecta at the buzzer to win the D5 state championship over St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda, CA) 47-46. Horizon was down 46-39 with 25.1 seconds remaining in the game and the Panthers were behind for most of the game. Horizon defeated Hoover 91-90 in OT at the Hoover MLK Showcase and handily defeated a young Foothills Christian team 53-37 to take the CIF-San Diego Section title, their section record 15th section title. Horizon did start the season 1-6 but three of those losses were to Torrey Pines 66-62, CIF D1 champion Mission Hills 68-18 and CIF D3 State & Section champion St. Augustine 73-32. Also, football players Darren Carrington and Markel Byrd were coming off of one week of practice after football season. Horizon going 5-5 (4th place) in the Coastal league shows how tough the league is every year.
