The Four Seasons at Eternal Flame Falls

Few waterfalls, anywhere, are as spectacular as Eternal Flame Falls at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, NY south of Buffalo. A flame glows, night and day, fed from natural gas that seeps through the Rhinestreet shale there. In times of excessive rain, the flame is known to extinguish on occasion--it can be easily re-lit with a match. The scent of the natural gas is evident as one walks closer to this cascade. The hike into the creek is not too difficult, there is a steep decline before one actually enters Shale Creek there. Proper footwear/boots are a must and spikes are essential in the winter months.
