The History of American School for the Deaf

American School for the Deaf was the first permanent school for the Deaf in the United States. How did this school find its way to survive through sign language oppressions and hard times to where they are today? You'll learn more in this video.

As it is now known, the American School of Sign Language began on July 4th, 1817, when Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet opened a small private day-school with six students. It was created to teach deaf children how to communicate in sign language and became the first school for educating hearing people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The school remains one of the oldest schools in America today. UNESCO has recognized it as "an extraordinary example" that shows what can be done through education for those with special needs.
