Geoffrey Hinton, 2024 Nobel Laureate in Physics and widely known as the Godfather of AI, is now warning that millions of jobs are about to disappear. He says Universal Basic Income is the solution.

Hinton received the Nobel Prize for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks — the very breakthroughs now disrupting entire industries.

In this CBS Mornings interview, he explains how AI is advancing so rapidly that routine jobs — from call centers and paralegals to accountants and lawyers — are already at risk of being automated.

“If I had a job in a call center, I’d be very worried. Any routine job... those jobs have had it.”

“We know what's going to happen. The extremely rich are going to get even more extremely rich. And the not very well off... are going to have to work 3 jobs now.”

“I was consulted by people in Downing Street (the UK Prime Minister’s office), and I advised them that Universal Basic Income was a good idea.”

Hinton urges the public to pressure governments to act — not just to manage AI’s economic impact, but to rethink inequality, economic security, and the entire social contract.

When a Nobel-winning pioneer of AI says it’s time for UBI, it’s time to listen.
