Tors - Never Give Up | Vevo DSCVR

Brothers Matt and Theo Weedon, who comprise two-thirds of the upstart English band Tors, know that it’s important to bet on yourself. “Theo and I had been writing songs for other people,” lead singer Matt recalled during a break in their DSCVR set. “We got fed up with them taking all the glory, living the high life on the road, so we decided to start a band.” Rounding out the trio is Jack Bowden, a multi-instrumentalist who the brothers found via an online ad. The group has always leaned into its knack for vocal harmony, no doubt bolstered by the literal and figurative filial connection the three gents have with one another. The Devon natives’ latest project, ‘Never Give Up,’ is exactly what the title portends: a 20-minute boost of inspiration, which is exactly what a lot of us need right now. Interestingly, its sound entails less pop polish than Tors’ last pair of EPs, ‘Miracle’ and ‘Anything Can Happen.’ The latter caught the ear of Glassnote Records and helped lead to a deal a couple years ago. From the jump, ‘Never Give Up’ crackles with locomotive percussion and buoyant gang vocals. It feels like a fresh start. Overall, the EP leans into observational storytelling. “Scared” is rife with existential questions and philosophies. On the next track, “Honey,” Weedon notices something is off with his crush and envisions their future together. If Tors teaches us anything, it’s that everybody needs encouragement, and these two performances should get you pointed in the right direction.
