"Cheres (Hutsul leather belt) is a very majestic thing, a festive one. For a real Hutsul, it showed his status. The wider it was or more it was decorated with metal, the more status it showed. There could be silver coins and chains, and a pipe, and a "protychk" (metal rod for cleaning a pipe), a knife applied to it. On one side a bird (medallion), on the other side a "tabivka" (a leather bag over the shoulder). The wider the belt, the more it showed his status, that he was the most important man in the village."

"I am a person who collects this, because this is our history, many such things such as cheres (leather belt), tabivki (leather bag), powder flasks. Many people let's say in central Ukraine do not know what it is. And if you show an ordinary person it (accessories for hutsul traditional garment), he will not pay money for it, because he does not know what it is. And for the Hutsuls, they are not sacred relics, but very close to that."

"Since ancient times, cheres (hutsul belts) have been used not only as a means of decoration, but also as a kind of body armour. It consists of two parts, the leather is folded in half, they (craftsmen) even used to put coins inside. And while wearing it, the leather was hardened by the salt that was released from sweat. Coins are in the middle, plus hard 4 millimetres of thick leather folded in two. All together 8 millimetres of leather with coins was difficult to cut with an axe to say nothing about a knife."

LEADIN:
The members of Kalush Orchestra - last year's Eurovision Song Contest winner - are remembered for their traditional Ukrainian outfits as well as their winning song.
At the final last year, one of the musicians was sporting a very traditional Hutsel style belt.
Known as cheres belts, the ancient art of crafting of them is being kept alive in Kosiv, Ukraine, where an artisan is still making them by hand.
STORYLINE:
A wide strap of leather decorated with studs and colorued details.
This is a traditional Hutsel belt and a customer has come to Yuriy Porokh's workshop in the Ivano-Frankivsk region of Ukraine to try it on.
