On the night of August 9th, 1841, a fire broke out on the Erie during a routine voyage on Lake Erie. In just 12 minutes, the elegant paddle steamer was consumed by the inferno. Most of the 343 people on board never had a chance to escape one of the deadliest disasters in the history of the Great Lakes.
