The dubious trading app MTFE looks like a Ponzi scheme: promising unrealistic returns to lure investors. After receiving initial payouts, hundreds of Bangladeshis recently found their balances suddenly dropped to zero. Like past scams, the operators vanished with the money. Despite authorities vowing to combat illegal online trading, gambling, and crypto activities, enforcement remains weak. People were enticed by the prospect of quick profits, but now fear losing most of their investment. The accurate scale of losses from this latest scam remains uncertain. But officials acknowledge that lack of oversight enabled shady apps to increase, worsening the forex crisis by facilitating massive capital flight. Stronger regulation and enforcement are needed to protect consumers from such predatory schemes.
