In 2016, the Single Transferable Vote Proportional Representation voting system for the Australian Senate was reformed to remove Group Voting Tickets and introduce optional preferential voting. This got rid of the practice of "Preference Whispering" that led to a number of Senators elected with very little public support due to back room deals.

This reform, supported by the Liberal Party - National Party government, the Australian Greens and Independent Senator Nick Xenophon, was opposed by the Australian Labor Party and a number of Crossbenchers who saw it as harmful to their hopes of reelection.

Over the night of May 17 - 18 2016, The Senate had an epic debate until the bill was passed!
